Seaton, East Devon: Now Over One Million Euro Plan Unveiled to Protect Homes from Coastal Erosion

The East Devon town is responding proactively to the increasing threat of coastal erosion, which has left homes threatened along an almost two-mile stretch of coastline that it shares with neighbouring Beer. Located at the mouth of the River Axe, Seaton remains very popular with holiday makers, and is in the middle of the Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site and the East Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. But degradation of the cliffs that line its coastline has led the local authorities to develop a £1.4 million plan that is expected to be made available to the town, as well as its residents, in the event of the cliffs crumbling.

The coastal defences are about stabilising the cliffs to stop them from falling into the sea, stopping more landslides, while the new drains cut into the cliffs will help manage water flow and limit potential for soil erosion. Local wildlife habitats will also be improved to safeguard the environment and act as a natural defence to the encroaching tide.

Residents and visitors can follow local government and environmental agency communications for updates on the plan and more specifics on how the project will proceed.(Source : East Devon District Council)
